There are many couples each year that thrive on adventure and choose the Faroe Islands as their destination wedding. The Faroe Islands encompass stunning mystery and breathtaking nature with majestic waterfalls and inspiring landscapes, perfect for your dream wedding. The Faroes also offer a deep and rich culture which mixes the best aspects of all the Nordic countries.
See below our “step by step” guide for how to get married in the Faroe Islands.

Before Arrival
Civil marriage ceremonies in the City of Tórshavn are solemnised by the Major of Tórshavn and are held in Faroese with a translation in English. The ceremony is free of charge. In order to get married by civil ceremony in the City of Tórshavn, we need certain documentation from you upon your arrival in the Faroe Islands:
- Birth certificates
- Your marital status.
- Final divorce papers if you are divorced
- Death certificate of your former spouse if you are a widow/widower
After the first contact with the City of Tórshavn, you will get the form “Notice of Marriage” sent to your email address to fill in and sign. Please send the “Notice of Marriage” back to the municipality by email.
If the original documents are not available in English, they must be translated by an authorised translator.
Please send the documentation listed above to this e-mail address torshavn@torshavn.fo
Please note that notice must be given not later than 4 weeks before the date of the intended civil marriage.

Bringing two witnesses
On the day of the wedding you will need to bring with you two people who are prepared to witness the marriage and sign the marriage register. Send us the names and addresses of the witnesses.
If you do not bring two witnesses, let us now – then two members of staff will be present and witness the civil marriage ceremony.
How to proceed
If your submitted documents are complete, we will be able to make an appointment for your marriage. Please tell us your planned day of arrival in the Faroe Islands.
After the wedding ceremony, you will be handed an international marriage certificate in Faroese and English.

Location
There are endless stunning spots to explore during your adventure destination wedding in the Faroe Islands. The islands have large geographical variations in precipitation mainly due to the topography of the islands. Climate is characterized by mild winters and cool summers and quite humid and rainy weather with frequent formations of fog, especially in June, July and August. During winter time the weather is usually unpredictable with rain, wind, snow and sun, all together in one day. In mid summer the weather usually allows outdoor wedding ceremonies without any problem at all. This is also done by many Faroese people every year (See wedding ceremony in Sandagerð and wedding ceremony in Syðradali).
All of our wedding photographers know how to get to those spectacular drive-to-locations for your photoshoot. Just remember to book your wedding photographer early.
